To qualify and learn in the environment of workboat operations on the River Tyne. Assisting in operating the port’s workboat fleet, including the multi-purpose workboat ‘Sir Bobby Robson’ and the debris clearance vessel ‘Clearwater’. What will the apprentice be doing?

Undertake training in and become competent in the following (Please note, that the Port of Tyne has the right to remove and or replace any of the below):

  • L2 Diploma in Maritime Studies (Workboats)
  • STCW Basic Safety Courses
  • Non ECDIS Marine Electronic Chart Systems
  • MCA Small Ships Navigation and Radar on Code Vessels
  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Theory
  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Practical
  • RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities
  • Manual Handling
  • Marine Hydraulic Loader Crane Operator
  • Marine Radio Short Range Certificate
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Your apprenticeship training will be a fully work-based learning programme across 18 months, method to be confirmed. Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you will achieve a level 3 qualification as a Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
• Potential full-time position available upon completion of apprenticeship.
